Many families prefer an early-morning session because it allows them to enjoy the rest of the day without interruption. Mid-morning and afternoon outdoor sessions should be avoided whenever possible because of the heat, bright sunlight, and harsh shadows. Late afternoon should also be avoided due to the rainy season.

Children under five should be fed before the session. Schedule the appointment during the time of day when your child is normally happiest and most cooperative. Please do not schedule the session around a child’s usual nap or feeding time. Bring a favorite small toy or comfort item if it will help your child feel relaxed.

When young children are involved, remember that children do not always follow a plan, and that is perfectly fine. Patience, flexibility, and a relaxed attitude usually produce the most natural expressions.

6. Grandparents with all the grandchildren

The goal is to coordinate—not necessarily match. Choose colors and clothing styles that blend well across the entire family. I recommend the “keep it simple” approach:

• Choose solid, medium-to-dark colors.
• Coordinate colors among everyone in the group.
• Avoid bright red, pure white, stripes, large logos, and busy patterns.
• Select full-length outfits whenever possible (no shorts).
• Wear properly fitted clothing. Clothing that is too loose can make a person appear larger.
• Remember that lighter and brighter colors tend to come forward, while darker colors tend to recede.
• Consider the location and where the finished portrait will be displayed.

Blending is the key. Your family—and the relationships among you—should be the focus of the portrait, not the clothing.
